VOLUNTEER
Today’s emergency responders do far more than put out fires or bandage wounds. Emergency responders are the first line of defense in natural and man-made disasters. They respond to vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents, specialized rescue situations, and a vast array of fire and emergency medical incidents.
The Griffin Fire department has initiated a recruitment campaign for individuals interested to learn how to “answer the call” and serve the Steamboat Island community and beyond.
Becoming a volunteer emergency responder can be the most rewarding experience of your life and allows you to reach out to someone at their most vulnerable time.
Griffin Fire Department is accepting applications to become a volunteer Entry Level Firefighter and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Lateral Firefighter and/or EMT
What We Do
Griffin volunteers take the opportunity to do it all. We protect lives, homes, and dreams. We teach people in our community (everyone from young children to the elderly) the rules of fire safety, so that every person can protect themselves against the dangers of fire. We provide vital life saving support to Thurston County’s Medic One system by responding to calls for emergency medical assistance.

What Does it Take
First of all, it takes a willingness to work hard and be dedicated, to achieve and maintain the Griffin Fire Department’s standards of excellence. In addition to both written and physical qualifications, a recruit must successfully complete an extensive recruit training program to gain basic knowledge and skills, either medical or firefighting. Continuing training is required throughout the EMT or firefighters’ career to keep skills sharp. Volunteers are expected to pursue and maintain the same standards and skill levels as full-time career EMT or firefighters’ do.

It requires working as a team under sometimes very challenging circumstances and extraordinary situations. RESIDENT
This program is designed to provide opportunities of growth for individuals seeking the experience while bolstering the district’s ability to meet the resource needs of the community. Station 13-2 is the primary substation for the district and houses the resident firefighters. A resident is a qualified individual who maintains the districts minimum requirements in return for residence at station 13-2. The Resident Volunteer Firefighter Program is an excellent opportunity to maximize your experience in the fire service while living independently in a fire station.

The resident accommodations at 13-2 include a private dorm room and community bathrooms, kitchen and dayroom.
