A burn permit is now required for ALL non-recreational burns, regardless of size.

Please stop by the Griffin Fire Department, 3707 Steamboat Island Loop NW, for a copy of the NEW Burn Regulations and a Burn Permit.

A Burn Permit is now required for ALL non-recreational fires, regardless of size

Note:  A "recreational fire" means cooking fires, campfires, and bonfires using charcoal or firewood that occur in designated areas or on private property for cooking, pleasure, or ceremonial purposes.  The total fuel area of a "recreational fire" shall NOT exceed three feet in diameter and/or two feet in height.

The permit form must be completed and signed by the landlord or the landlord's agent for the site where the burning will occur

bullet

You MUST obtain a Burn Permit and a copy of the Burn Regulations from the Fire Department before any burning can take place and it must be on-site at all times while burning

Residential Outdoor Burning permit applicants must comply with all regulations that are specified on the permit.  These regulations include, but are not limited to, hours of burning, conditions for burning, size of burn pile, locations of burning, fire safety rules, and air quality implications of residential outdoor burning

A Land Clearing burn permit can be obtained by calling Olympic Region Clean Air Agency at 586-1044.  Land clearing burning involves trees, stumps, shrubbery or other natural vegetation from land clearing projects

PROHIBITED MATERIALS

It is against state law for any person to allow any outdoor fire that contains any of the following:

Household garbage or trash
(including cardboard or paper—other than what is necessary to start the fire)

bullet

Dead animals

bullet

Asphalt

bullet

Petroleum products

bullet

Paints

bullet

Rubber products

bullet

Plastics

bullet

Treated wood

bullet

Construction/demolition debris

bullet

Metal

bullet

Any other substance that normally emits dense smoke or noxious odors when burned

Note:  Burn barrels are outlawed in Washington.
 

ALTERNATIVES TO BURNING YARD DEBRIS

Curbside Yard Waste Collection
Call your garbage/recycling provider to see if collection of yard waste is available. 
Not available in all areas of the county.

Mobile Chip and Grind Program
Drop off woody yard debris for free at bi-monthly events.  Only woody material
15" in diameter or less (no stumps will be accepted). Program runs March
through June and September through November.  Call for dates (740-6800).

Neighborhood Chipping Days—You Keep The Chips!
Get four or more neighborhood households together and sign up for
two hours of free chipping.  Branches and brush 6" in diameter and
less are accepted.  Program runs April through October.  Call for details.

Call Water and Waste Management for more information.

Backyard Composting Bins and Workshops Available
Get instructions to make your own compost bin; buy a reduced-rate compost
